ECMS-Inglewood Career Day Plants Seeds of Success

More than thirty professionals attended the annual Environmental Charter Middle School-Inglewood Career Day to help our students "Plant Seeds for Success."

After a networking lunch sponsored by Hummus-House, speakers participated in panel discussions with ECMS-I students. Speakers represented a diverse range of fields, including  professional soccer, environmental engineering, construction, medicine, social work and veterinary, among many others.

“Seeing kids make connections between things they learn in school, the things they do for fun, and the possibilities for their careers was my favorite part of Career Day. It was inspiring!”

– ECMS-Inglewood Career Day Presenter

Professionals shared personal stories and career experiences and answered student questions. One of our partners, EmpowHer — whose mission is to empower marginalized teen girls by helping them gain the skills necessary to succeed through education, training and mentorship — supported Environmental Charter Middle School in sourcing partnerships that brought many of the Career Day speakers to campus.

Presenters were enthusiastic and our students were able to link what they are doing in school to potential future career paths. The day helped them to envision what success would look like for them!

Career Day is one of the many college-and-career-readiness initiatives that Environmental Charter Schools presents to support our students in envisioning pathways for success.

Chevron Corporation engineers participated as Career Day speakers and took the opportunity to award Environmental Charter Schools with $60,000 in grant funding to support STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programs. At ECS, STEM serves as foundational work for students at every grade level, but it also extends beyond the classroom into our after-school programming with programs like MESA (Math, Engineering, and Science Achievement) Program, the Solar Boat program, Sustain-a-Store, the Bike Shop and the Green Ambassadors program.
